A St. Louis, Missouri Inspired Custom Typeface
St. Louis is known for being the "Gateway to the West" - a city full of potential, innovation, and new beginnings. It is rich in history and diverse in it's many different peoples and cultures. This type face is inspired by those ideals.
The research process included looking at the historical background of the city, the cultures and people that live there, and old newspapers, tabloids, and signage.
Many prominent sights and places such as the St. Louis Arch, Union Station, and the City Museum were also used as inspiration.
Old waterways used for trade and transportation as well as the gusty, windy weather the Midwest is known for was also used for inspiration in the typeface's design.
Before digitalizing the typeface, gouache paints and calligraphy pens and markers were used to get a look and feel for the design.
